Conservation Back of House Virtual Discussion

Approaches and Ethics of Object Conservation

April 21, 21 12:30pm-1:30pm with Sarah Owens, Conservator

Sarah Owens, Conservator specializing in textiles at the Anchorage Museum, will discuss the differences between conservation and restoration. Today’s talk will center around objects made from skin, fur, metal or wood.

How do we preserve the history of an object? Conserving a precious pair of mukluks may mean being careful not to clean off the evidence of use on the soles, as that is part of the history of the object.

Skin and fur moccasins, mukluks, metal bowls or utensils, wooden tools – all are objects in the Anchorage Museum’s collection. Sarah will talk about the conservation of objects, and then allow time for you to ask questions about the care and stewardship of your own pieces at home.

Participants will learn how to approach each object individually, depending on the context. Sarah will also share approaches and the ethics side of museum conservation work.
